In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, finding the right program that nurtures a child’s passion and talent can be transformative. At Spark Education, we take pride in offering top-notch online and offline courses that help students excel. One such success story is Sean, a ten-year-old math enthusiast from Australia whose journey with Spark Math has been nothing short of remarkable. At just ten years old, Sean has already achieved remarkable success in various international math competitions, thanks to his passion for the subject and the support of his dedicated teachers at Spark Math. This blog shares Sean’s inspiring journey, illustrating the effectiveness of Spark Math’s programs and offering valuable insights for parents looking to nurture their children’s talents.
Discovering a Passion for Math
Sean’s fascination with math began early. At the age of five, he was captivated by BBC’s “Number Blocks,” a show that introduced him to basic arithmetic in an engaging manner. His mother noticed his natural inclination towards numbers and decided to nurture this interest. “I saw that he had a knack for math, so I wanted to cultivate that,” she recalls.
This quest led them to various online math programs, starting with a challenging Chinese Olympiad math class, which had a tiered structure with ordinary and advanced classes. Despite failing the entrance test for the advanced class, Sean’s mother did not lose hope. Instead, she enrolled him in the ordinary class, where he gradually built his skills. Later, they transitioned to a Singaporean institution. It was here that Sean met his future mentor, Macy.
The Spark Math Experience
When Macy joined Spark Math, Sean and his family followed her, drawn by her expertise and engaging teaching style. Sean’s mother, originally from Beijing, appreciated the structured and comprehensive curriculum offered by Spark Math, which contrasted with the less detailed Australian math education system. Sean enrolled in both Level 5 (L5) and Level 6 (L6) courses, a decision that proved to be instrumental in his development.
Dual-Level Learning
Attending two levels simultaneously allowed Sean to benefit from both elementary and advanced content. The L5 course covered the pinnacle of primary school math, while L6 introduced middle school concepts. This approach ensured a robust understanding of foundational topics and early exposure to more complex material. Although initially challenging, this dual-level strategy paid off, enhancing Sean’s problem-solving skills and deepening his mathematical knowledge.
Engaging Classes and Dedicated Guidance
Sean thrived in Spark Math’s interactive online classes, which he accessed using an iPad. The engaging format kept him focused and made learning enjoyable. Small class sizes and the use of dynamic course materials further contributed to his positive experience. His teachers, Macy and Rachel, played crucial roles in his success. Macy’s extensive experience and dedication helped Sean grasp challenging concepts, while Rachel’s meticulous teaching and encouragement to participate in competitions pushed Sean to excel.
Motivation and Rewards
Spark Math’s recognition and rewards for competition success motivated Sean to persist. He enjoyed the challenges and felt a sense of accomplishment with each award. This positive reinforcement, coupled with his intrinsic interest in math, kept him motivated and committed to continuous improvement.
Math Competitions and Achievements
Sean began participating in math competitions at the end of his second grade. His first contest was the Math League, followed by Math Kangaroo, American Math Olympiad (AMO), and Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO). Initially, his results were modest, placing in the top 5% to 8%. However, after spending some time in Spark Math, Sean’s performance improved significantly.
In the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), Sean achieved an impressive fourth place in New South Wales. His success continued as he participated in other contests such as AMO and Math League, where he consistently earned perfect scores. At the beginning of 2024, Sean entered the AMC 8 competition, which tests middle school-level content. Although this was intended as a trial run without extensive preparation, Sean performed exceptionally well, awarded the Honor Roll (Global Top 5%).

Balancing Academics and Extracurriculars
While math is a significant part of Sean’s life, it is not his only interest. He is also passionate about music and sports. Sean is currently at AMEB Piano Grade 5 and enjoys playing basketball with his friends. He has also developed a talent for drawing, showcasing his creativity through his artwork.
Sean’s reading habits are also impressive. He participates in his school’s Premier Reading Challenge and has read numerous books. His favorite books are the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series, which he has read multiple times. “He loves reading history and science books, and his reading volume is quite high for his age,” his mother shares.
Sean’s Perspective
We also had the pleasure of speaking with Sean. When asked about his experiences and future aspirations, he enthusiastically shared his love for solving challenging math problems and his interest in programming. “I enjoy tackling difficult problems. It’s fun and rewarding,” he says. Sean’s advice to other students is simple yet powerful: “Keep going and don’t give up. It took me a while to get good at competitions, but persistence pays off.”
