What is SASMO?
SASMO is a top mathematical contest open to students from primary 1 to junior college organised by the Singapore International Mastery Contests Centre. Introduced in 2006, SASMO is now one of the largest math contests in Asia. Numerous primary and secondary schools across Singapore participate in SASMO every year. The test takes 90 minutes and features 25 questions over two sections. Section A consists of 15 multiple choice questions, while section B has 10 non-routine questions.
How is SASMO Graded
An award certificate and a medal are given to participants in the top 40%. These students with excellent results will win the Perfect Score, Gold, Silver or Bronze award. The highest accolade given in SASMO, the Perfect Score award, is given to students who have answered every question correctly. The Gold award is presented to students in the top 8%, Silver award for the next 12%, and Bronze for the next 20%.
SASMO is a contest aimed at stretching the ability of the brightest students. The test’s main objectives are to cultivate mathematical intuition and critical thinking, as well as stimulate students’ interest in solving math problems. By taking part in SASMO, students can gain valuable experience and exposure to international olympiads at a young age. This helps students to hone higher-order thinking skills and encourages them to go beyond their potential.
Why Students Participate in SASMO
A contest that challenges students to strive better, SASMO sets thought-provoking and tough questions. Out of 44,639 participants, only 69 students achieved the perfect score. Taking part in the SASMO is an achievement that will vastly boost a student’s portfolio. This is especially important for students who are interested in the Direct School Admissions route or entering distinguished universities in the future.
Most importantly, top performing students will gain access to a host of opportunities. Students in the top 40% of the SASMO contest will be eligible to take part in the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), a prestigious annual competition. For Perfect Score and Gold award winners, they will get the chance to join the International Youth Honor Society (IJHS) and Youth Leadership Camp (YALA).
On top of receiving all these valuable chances, participating in SASMO helps to enhance students’ mathematical knowledge and improve their problem-solving skills. The exposure to a huge undertaking like SASMO is a remarkable learning experience that boosts students’ confidence and skills. A student who has prepared and went for a math competition will gain many important benefits for their future.
